The Melanau Calendar

Wearing Ipok Balau (Sago Spirit) Mask during Kaul Festival (Melanau New Year)

The Melanau conception of the universe was one of layers and one in which the territories of all should be respected and a balance maintained. Hence it is of paramount importance to be aware of the sorrounding such as changes in the weather, the wind, the water tides and the position of constellation.

The Melanau Calendar ( Bulan Melanau) serves as an important guide for daily activities of livelihood such as fishing, planting, harvesting, house construction and marriage because the calendar is guided by the constellations and the way of nature, the spirits and god. The First month begins in March. Each month consists of 30 days. The names of the Month are as follows:
Gregorian Month
Melanau Month
March Pengejin ( The Month of the Spirits)
April Pengelawah Umik (The Month of the Lesser Clear Water)
May Pengelawah Ayeng (The month of the Greater Clear Water)
June Paka Umik (The Month of the Rise of the Lesser Stars)
July Paka Ayeng (The Month of the Rise of the Greater Stars)

dagen sesetengah keadaan gak a memerhati perubahan musim akou fikir bulan pengejin lebih berkait ngan musim pekena jekan jin & jin aneak (keli & anak ikan air tawar yg lain) @ month of eel, bulan pegalan lebih berkait ngan musim geramah, pengiraan bulan sepatutnya nda kna bak susud gregorian calender sbb musim berubah susud perkiraan perubahan musim, eg. bulan musit, lengadeang, matai bulan, pangai biteang, biteang masuok, nyaem lawah, etc.
